What We Believe

Our Beliefs

Founded in 1883, Coker Methodist Church is a friendly, family-oriented, mission-minded church. At Coker Methodist Church we have a place for you to belong and a plan for you to grow in Jesus.

God

We believe in one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; distinct but inseparable, eternally one in essence and power.

What we believe - God
What we believe - Jesus

Jesus

We believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who came to humanity as God’s self-revelation. He lived a sinless life, introduced and inaugurated the Kingdom of God, died for the sins of the world and was raised on the third day bringing reconciliation between God and humanity. He now sits at the right hand of God the Father and He will return to bring redemption to all of creation.

Holy Spirit

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the counselor, the advocate who proceeds from the Father and the Son, and leads God’s people in God’s ways. The Spirit convicts people of their sin and empowers the church to be the body of Christ in this world leading the church to bear spiritual fruit through the use of spiritual gifts.

What we Believe - Holy Spirit
What we believe - Salvation

Salvation

We believe that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone, not by our own merit or work. The offering Christ freely made on the cross is the perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the world, redeeming humanity from all sin, so that no other satisfaction is required.

The Bible

We believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God and contains all things necessary for salvation and understanding the story of God’s gracious action throughout history. It is to be received through the Holy Spirit as the true rule and guide for faith and practice. Whatever is not revealed in or established by the Holy Scriptures is not to be made an article of faith nor is it to be taught as essential to salvation.

The Church

We believe that the Church of Jesus Christ is the community of all true believers under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It is the redemptive fellowship in which the Word of God is proclaimed and the sacraments (The Lord’s Supper and Baptism) are duly administered. By the filling of the Holy Spirit the Church exists for the maintenance of worship, the edification of believers, and the redemption of the world.
