When You Need a Safe Space: How Support Ministries Can Be a Lifeline

Life doesn’t always go as planned. Grief, caregiving stress, addiction recovery, or unexpected transitions can leave us feeling isolated and unsure where to turn.

At Coker Methodist Church in San Antonio, we believe no one should walk through life’s hardships alone. Through our Stephen Ministry, support and recovery groups, and caregiver workshops, we offer safe, grace-filled spaces where you can be heard, supported, and gently reminded: you are not alone.

  1. Stephen Ministers: One-on-One Care for Hard Seasons

Are you experiencing a difficult time due to grief, illness, job loss, or a major life change? Our trained Stephen Ministers are lay members of the church who provide confidential, Christ-centered care in one-on-one relationships. They’re not counselors but compassionate listeners who walk you through your pain with prayer and presence.

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” —Galatians 6:2

  1. Support & Recovery Groups: A Community That Understands

Coker hosts several ongoing support groups, including:

  • Women’s Al-Anon – Mondays, 6–7 PM (Health and Wellness Center)
  • Adult Children of Alcoholics – Mondays, 6:30–7:45 PM (Wesley Building, Room 803)
  • Alcoholics Anonymous – Tuesdays, 7–8 PM (Health and Wellness Center)
  • Al-Anon – Thursdays, 7–8 PM (Health and Wellness Center)
  • S-Anon – Thursdays, 6:30–7:50 PM (Wesley Building, Room 804)

Nursery is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

These groups meet on campus but are community-led and open to all. They offer shared understanding and recovery support in a confidential and welcoming setting.

  1. Grief Support: Walking Through Loss Together

Coker offers GriefShare, a group-based program to help individuals process loss and find hope again. Participants explore the unpredictable emotions of grief in a safe, structured environment.

  1. Workshops for Caregivers and Seniors

Caring for loved ones can be overwhelming. Coker offers Caregiver’s Workshops to help families plan for long-term care, finances, medical decision-making, and more. These workshops are practical, compassionate, and open to anyone preparing to care for aging family members.

Coker also hosts monthly Coker Adult Fellowship (CAF) luncheons with guest speakers and connection opportunities for older adults.
