We are very pleased to announce that Adrian Lucio will join our Coker Staff Family as the new Youth Director. Adrian will report to Cheryl Kendall, our Director of Family Ministries and will work alongside Youth Associate, Marlie Riojas, in drawing our youth into meaningful community here at Coker.
Adrian was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and moved to San Antonio in 2010 to pursue a career in Stand-Up Comedy. After years of comedy shows, long car rides, delayed flights, and extremely late nights, Adrian felt a tug on his heart to go into ministry. In 2015 Adrian accepted a job as the Youth Director at Helotes Hills United Methodist Church and that’s where his passion for youth ministry began. He shares, “I had found my quirky humor, my passion for Jesus, my ability to talk with teenagers, and love for junk food was a perfect fit for youth ministry.” Adrian was instrumental in launching and growing the Helotes Hills UMC Youth Program.
In 2017, God called Adrian to East Texas, where he became the full-time Youth Director at First United Methodist Church in Palestine, Texas. It was there that he matured in his ministry walk, and by matured he jokes that he advanced from merely junk food to learning more about teens and their life lived in TikTok videos and Among us (Parents and youth know the references, we are sure).
Adrian will begin with Coker on February 7th. His favorite scripture passage is John 3:30, “He must become greater; I must become less.” Adrian looks forward to sharing that scripture and many others with our youth in-person, on TikTok, or wherever the Holy Spirit prompts him to share. He’ll begin his ministry getting to know our Coker Youth Family and then will be reaching out to draw others in.
Parents and youth are invited to meet-and-greet Adrian during the Sunday Night Youth Group on Feb 7th. Parents are welcome to say hello at the 5:30 PM drop-off or at the 7:15 PM pick-up. Since that is Super Bowl Sunday, we will have a few fun football-themed things planned as well.
When you see Adrian, give him a very warm welcome to Coker and if you want to start a conversation you can ask him about things like: Jesus, What in the world is “Among Us,” Sports in general, Kansas City Chiefs, Texas Rangers, and (insert applause) our beloved San Antonio Spurs… coffee, guitars, dad jokes, anything that runs on gasoline, and the story of Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace. Adrian shared, “I’m excited to see how God will work with our Coker Youth.”
